Took the Mistress out for the last ride of the year in November of last year. The ride was great, so I thought. A day later there was a strong odor of gas and a puddle of gas behind the passengers rear tire right where the fuel return line enters the rear frame rail. I thought that was odd, it never happened before. So I was looking around the engine compartment and noticed, what looked like spray of dirty water dried on the right inner fender in front of the shock mount. I didn't remember going through any puddles. Upon further investigation I saw the top of the Carter fuel pump had the same dirty residue on it. Then I put two and two together and realized the spray and the gas puddle was probably caused by the fuel pump diaphragm failing.
I removed the fuel pump and took it apart. The fuel pump was only a few years old and I wouldn't it to fail so soon. When I took it apart, I found the issue with the diaphragm. The rubber was fine, no cuts or holes. The rubber diaphragm is sandwiched between two metal plated with a washer on the bottom. The washer had broken in four pieces and was sitting in the bottom "bowl". I guess I found the problem. Has anyone seen this?
I was going to order a kit from Mancini racing but found a guy here in Massachusetts that makes all of the parts needed to rebuild the Carter 6903 fuel pump. All of the parts are made here in the USA from their machinist and the owner himself.
The kit was delivered this week and I rebuild the fuel pump. I installed it and started the Mistress with no leaks.
