Why did Mother Mopar deside to make the E-bodies so simular, yet different? And why then did they change the challenger trim later? Does anyone know the reasons?

Commonality of parts to cut production costs but still be different enough to have there own brand identity.

The Plymouth was always the economy line while Dodges were upscale with more chrome options etc...and more $$ We have members who are partial to Plymouths and others to Dodges. All Mopars so it is all good. Mother mopar like all other makes used many of the driveline, brake parts interchangeable accross model lines to save $$ just as burntorange70 said.

I believe The cuda was re designed for the 70 model year to be a straight line/drag race car and the Callenger was more for track and street thus the T/A and R/T models although both look awesome doing either

And now Fia-Mopar is remoured to pull the Challenger, when all they have to do is put it on a diet. Will this possible Cuda just be another disapointment that reuses a great car name? or will it be a head turner?

To put it todays terms the chally is like the new 300 and the cuda is like the new charger. The chally looks like a higher end sports sedan, they even had luggage racks.Where the cuda was more of a smooth body line pony car.
