Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone has one of these "D34" torqueflite automatics in their mopars? I decoded my fender tag and it came up with D34 as just "torqueflite automatic transmission" Not a 727 or a 904, just torqueflite. Is this a bad thing? Should i be looking for a 727 or will this one work alright? I just don't know what to think about this. Hopefully you guys can help me out. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

D32 should be the code for a 727.

Will have to look in my book when I get home but I think D34 is a 904.

What year car and what motor? 904 is a good trans. Just depends on your motor and power.

I have a '74 Barracuda 318 2barrel with a console shift automatic. I went on many sites now with tag decoders and everything I find says that D34 is just a Torqueflite transmission...plain and simple. D32 is for a HD 727, D34 just says Torquflite Transmission. My main site I used is http://www.stockmopar.com/mopar-fen...B&Vin3=254591&vin=BH23G4B254591&Submit=Decode

I used this site for a second reference
http://www.mopar1.us/build.html#trans

Just wondering what your opinion would be for my situation. Looking to swap out my 318 for a period correct '74 360 2 barrel and keep the console shifted auto. Hoping to get in the 400hp range with some porting and maybe some performer rpm aluminum heads. Should I look for a stamped 727 or will my tranny hold up? I'm just stumped at what the transmission is in it. I don't know what it means.

Unless it was a special ordered transmission all 318 2bbls are going to be backed with a 904 in those years. Don't sweat the code, chief. Internet sources are unreliable at best for explanations. Here's a couple of examples:

http://www.optioncodes.com/Chrysler_Option_Codes-%20A%20to%20F.html

Notice the data explanation for D32 as just being "heavy duty?"

Notice the data explanation for D34 as being "light duty?"

http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/chrysler/45/fender.htm

Notice the D34 on the above page as being "standard duty?"

The car came with a 904. Same trans that came from the factory in my '74, same code on the data plate.

Wanna be sure that it hasn't been swapped out in the intervene years check the pan.

The 904 can safely handle around 300 horse in fairly stock form with a just a few bolt in mods. A 904 can be built to handle what you want if you're willing to pay the price. But if you're looking for a drop-in, with just a few mods for longevity's sake, hunt down a 727.

You right Ramenth hard to find reliable info. I did find that S/6 and 318 came with 904's. Only way to know for sure though is to ID it. Here is a link to a thread that may help you do that. http://www.forebodiesonly.com/forum/showthread.php?t=62

904 is a good trans and can be built to handle 400+hP. The 727 is stronger stock but will also have more power loss through it than a 904. I would just use what ever trans that is in it m self but thats just me.
