Before painting the rear of the car, decied to re adjust the doors, the front fenders and the hood.
Paint cracked everywhere, but .... Yeah I'm sure you'll know what I'll say now : "I don't care. I'll touch these up and see what happens after a few winters."
The thing is just to not let things go too far corrosion wise. I keep my eyes open.

I just love good looking gaps and doors that close easily and silently.

I also "massaged" the tail light pannel so the lights fit better. It was terrible before.

Fortunalty the guys that scanned my deck lid did a great work with the color shade. It matches very well.

That pretty much it for the visual side of the car so far.
I'm now waiting on my steel wheels that are currently beeing widenned (had those late 70's 15X5.5 - Front will be widened 1 inch to make it 6.5 and rear 2.5 to make it 8 inch wide)
Then I'll paint them same color as the car.

Did I do a perfect job for the paint of the car ? nope. A good job ? Nope. It's an OK job. The idea was to repaint the rear so it matches the front. And to that extent, I may have made a too good of job haha. I wanted it all the same color. It's now done.

Technically, things have moved as well :

Fixed the windshield wipers not returning to parking position. It was a little metal contact inside the motor. Took 23 seconds to fix once I found the issue.

Discovered this and fixed it :

Not a fun job for a guy with no lift. It's not an insible job, but the frame is now safe.
A bit of rust primer, and rubber over it. Good for another 20 years !

As I had put the steering box back on the car (and took the opportunity to swap the exhaust gaskets) I decided, since I had all the parts with the car, to change all the ball bearings and buschings on the front end.

I don't have the proper socket for the upper's. So a guy did what he had to do...

That pivot bushing on the lower control arm needed a little "detour" to a friend's house with a good press. But with that, it was done in a breeze.
Decided to put it back together with red loctite on the thread of the shaft, and with the bolt in contact plus 1/4 turn. Stacked as much grease as I could there... And I can now see that the whole shaft is rotating in the K member. It's not the bushing itself that swivels like crazy and self destruct in 12 minutes. Mopar did NOT do a great job with that pivot arm thing. Will see if my technique destructs the K member but I really beleie I'm ok.

In with the new. Well, 2009-never-mounted-on-a-car new. This exact model isn't even available from wilwood anymore haha

Now all the front end bushings, ball bearings, bearings etc are done, I moved on to brake lines.
The only ones remaining are the ones going from the MC to the proportionning valve and the one that goes to the front passenger side.
All the other ones were either damaged or simply not there.... Fortunatly the car came with the main rear line et the 2 smaller ones going to each rear wheels, brand new.

Quickly made the little line for the front driver side in copper.
I slapped all of these on the car, taking my time (this time) - after all it's brakes. It's no joke. Used a billion of screw-in clamps to hold all those line secure.

The car also came with a new fuel line. It run off a rubber hose so far.
Slapped that on, too. Not the easiest without removing the tank, but I could do it.
Finally swapped the rear slave cylinders and gave a good cleaning to the drum brakes assemblies.

One last thing I had previously done is reweld the exhaust pipes on the back of the car. It had been slaughtered by the guys that did the floors.

And with this all, this car ran on the street - for the first time since at least 2009 (Previous owner said he never ran the car since he owned it).

That was prior to the paint etc. Sorry for this deconstructed posts - Just trying to upadte you all on my work on the car.

Those with sharp eyes and with no hard feeling for GM's may also see a little Camaro back there.
Well... I've only had my 2 pontiacs for years and years... And just after buying the Challenger I saw that camaro and could no resist to buy it.
This is an official General Motor France car, sold new in France in 1968 and it's a real documented RS/SS396. I just replaced the rear end on this car, the original one scared me on the 800 miles trip back home.
But anyway I'll end this here.

You are officially up to date.

Been there done that and still do!. I look back see what I typed and wonder how that happened.

The status of the car now :


The good / done.
  • Aesthtically she's good to me.
  • Front suspensions is 100% refurbished.
  • Front steering has 100% new ball joints. Steering gearbox still leaks a bit, I'm thinking one of the main O-ring supplied in the rebuilt kits is a thouw or two too small (wire diameter). But it's not a big leak at all anymore... We'll just add oil when need be, shall we ? Or put thicker oil in it ? Why not...
  • Brake lines are mostly new, old ones are checked and are good.
  • Brakes themselves are 100% new up front. New cylinders on the back (&cleaned and lubed up assemblies)
  • New wheel bearings up front, rear they seem OK.
  • Brake bleeding is done and the pedal is super firm.
  • Electrically safe and all working (added triple gauge directly on the "already butchered" dash cluster lately to monitor things)
  • Gearbox seems happy. Seems fresh actually. Oil is redder than red. When I bought the car, the kickdown rod wasn't right. So I cut it and made it longer so it now works correctly. The car downshifts perfectly.
  • Differential : looks like beeing a 3:55 and has an unknown posi that works. That is a super nice news!!! Checked the oil on it, and it's good. No leaks anywhere on the rear end, no bad noise.. Looks like it has been correctly assembled. Great.
The work in progress :
  • Carburator. Had an edelbrock 600cfm on it. It was puking fuel from the primaries at idle, even with the metering rods fully down and the primaries flaps open as it should (square opening on the fuel mixture screw holes). The idle fuel mixture screws had no effect since the carb was getting fuel through the primaries. Needle on the vacuum gauge was all the over the place !..... Discovered a vacuum leak on the intake. It was simply not tightenned at all ! Retightenned it and no more vacuum leak. Started seeing things change when playing with the mixtures screws but somehow it was still getting fuel from the primaries....This engine pulls a lot of vacuum at idle and my bet is simply that this carb was a little too small. The vacuum just sucked fuel from the primaries even with the flaps just a tiny bit openned. Had an Edelbrock 750 lying arround, so I gave it a try and it immediatly felt much better at idle, running much leaner. No leaks trhough the primaries anymore. Driving, I had the famous edelbrock lean spot when smoothly adding throttle in "cruising mode". Too much air, not enough fuel. WOT was and is still good though, and damn she moves !.... So I bought the adjusting kit for the carb (Jets, springs and metering rod for the primaries), and ended 2 steps "richer" for these transition fuel routes and it now feels much much better. No more bogging when off a red light. Did not need to swap the jets (good news for the milage), just the metering rods. Let the 5hg orange springs in for now, when driving more, if I feel the need for a bit more fuel I'll put the 7"s I have in the kit. I would have loved to have a third "richer" step without swapping the jets, but it does not exist. Putting bigger jets will make it MUCH richer all the way arround which isn't good for milage and the WOT does not require that. Anyway, that's a long text, I'm sure I lost most of you guys by now. I just can't stop writing when I'm launched.
  • Hot start. The thing just won't start when warmed up !!! Thought it was vapor locking, but when I put my big Lithium jump starter on it (thus feeding the starter with 14-15v - I know it's not ideal for the Ignition system...) it cranks much faster and starts in a millisecond. The ground is good on the starter. I may have a tiny bit too much initial ignition advance and still need to re check this, but my feeling is that the good old boat ancher original starter is not happy. The fact that some previous owner wrapped it in heat shield is a first redflag. The 190psi cranking pressure makes it hard for it when warmed up, and it probably is having a higher electrical resistance when warmed up by those stupid headers. Consequently it sucks too much voltage - creates a massive voltage drop - cranks slow - thus No start. So.... Rockauto here I am. Just ordered a 2006 dodge ram hemi (manual gearbox) starter. Apparently they fit great, also ordered new battery cables. Hopefully that will solve this very annoying issue. If only I knew this before putting the headers back !!! Dang it.

The future :
  • Add a passenger side mirror.
  • Find dog dishes for the steelies. If someone has some, please hit me in the pm.
  • Eat donuts in it while doing donuts. Yeap. That's the plan.

Isn't technology awesome ? ChatGPT is my new workshop mate. Info's that took me hours to find are now there in 10 seconds.
I see AI's as an extremely powerfull search engine.
To me, it does NOT make a human dumber, it helps him find proper info's faster and more accuratly.
It only made me wiser so far....

But anyway. I speak too much again.
I should stop coffee and I promised the wifey I would clean te bathroom, so I guess I write a lot here to avoid doing that.
And actually, Wifey is giving me "The stare" now. I don't want to die, so I'll just go clean the bathroom.

That aways gets me. It's a chore that just takes some time. You do that and they think your the best hubby ever. But you resurrect her dead car in the heat or cold and just about bleed to death. They think it's your hubby duty.
I'll surprise her today and clean it.

Really enjoy working on this car. I'm doing it lightheartedly - which is kind of rare for the perfectionnist I am. But this car unlocked this in me. I'm OK with her stains, scratches and cracks. Affraid to say I even like them... It gives the car some personality.
I can see this car becoming my summer daily driver.
