Pushrod length question

Neither. Too short, loss of duration, loss of valve lift and possible cam lobe damage, rocker arm damage, valve tip damage if too loose. Too long, loss of power from valves not closing completely, possible bent pushrods. That is if you have non-adjustable rocker arms. Get the proper tool. An adjustable push rod is not expensive at all.

Just to be clear, I am not talking about very short or very long, just a few thousandths either way.

couple of thou short is more easily compensated for with adjustment but overall I agree accurate is best

Just for some perspective - A few thousanths won't make a difference. Ten thou might.
