Side mirror attachment and placement

I have a door thats mounting for the mirror has rusted and need to do a repair. How were the mirrors originally mounted, a nut welded to the back side? I am planning on just using a nutsert (threaded rivet) unless a better option is available?

Also was the mirror placement on the passenger door in the exact same location as the drivers? I am installing a non-factory mirror on P-side.

your first post i see! welcome aboard. my 70 barracuda has sheet metal screws through the door skin. ( sport mirror) you should go to the welcome wagon and introduce your self and tell us about your car

The mirrors on my 71 were attached with rivnuts (threaded insert installed like a rivet) and screws.

my self i would prefer nut- serts but on my cuda i found sheet metal screws

The "rivnut" is the proper fastener. Nutsert is the same only better.

The mirror mounting location on the driver's side is more critical, if it is a remote control mirror, because the cables need to avoid some structures in the door (if I remember correctly).
