No, I'm not crazy, but I almost drove off the road when I heard this on the radio today. Washington is said to be developing a system where your mileage will be tracked by a GPS device and you will be taxed on miles driven not on gasoline usage. The idea behind this is that the government expects to lose gasoline tax money to fix roads because of the new electric cars and fuel efficient cars. If we buy less gas, they get less tax money. So if you expected to retire on the money you would save by getting an electric car, think again!!! Has anyone else heard of this?

Not surprised

I`m not surprised I sort of wondered how they would pay to fix roads and such if electric cars really took off. If they do this GPS thing I will figure out how to put my it on my riding lawn mower!

Not to change the subject but can you smoke the tires in an electric car? How would that be all tire screachin and smoke but no engine noise?
Thats a world I don`t want to live in!

The shortsightedness of politicians never cease to amaze me. And before this gets into a political shouting match, it doesn't matter which letter of the alphabet is behind the name. They all do it.

The higher the gas prices go, the less tax revenue generated. The more fuel efficiency demanded through CAFE stringency, the less tax revenue generated. So, how do they decided to make up for the short falls? Demand more taxes, which means that people will be driving less, which means more lost revenue, which means another increase, which means more lost revenue....

Watch what happens with cigarettes. NY has some outrageous taxes on cigarettes. A consumable item. Every time there's a price increase folks find new avenues of buying less expensive ones, rather it be making a trip to the local reservation, buying online, or just hopping across the border to a lower tax state. So, the government losses money. What do they do? They increase the taxes yet again, which makes more people find a different avenue, which losses even money.

Not once has one of them stopped to think that if they lower the taxes on said item, then people will be back to buying in the state and therefore generating income. I'd rather have 20 people pay me a dime apiece than one person pay me a dollar...

How will they get around the privacy issue?

Just another ill-thought-out knee-jerk policy by moronic politicians.

And everybody will have to equip every vehicle they own with a GPS device.
I have a Mustang GT, a Dakota R/T, a 340 Dart, a Dart Sport, 4 motorcycles and a car trailer and a motorcycle trailer.

And who is going to pay for all the people to collect all the info and collect the taxes??

WE ARE !!!

Vote the stupid people out of office and revoke their govt. pensions.

Unfortunately technology is often our worst enemy. I'm sure it would be both cheap and easy for the govt. to put chips in our license plates, like credit cards have, that then would be tracked by cell towers or satellites. As far as privacy goes, don't insurance companies and police already use the information from our car computers (black box) to see if we were speeding, wearing seat belts or applied our brakes before an accident? It's just something to be aware of and think about. :icon_jook:

Yup...you said a mouthful there Cudaized....and that's just one of the reason why my newest vehicle is 11 years old. If they put chips in the tags, I will probably find a way to make my own counterfeit tags....right number of course lol. I know chipped license plates will open up a whole new market for counterfeits!

I think it's called OBIII, OB II is what's in cars now. OBIII will have tracking via satellite. Speeding tickets, parking tickets will come in the mail, no more high speed chases, cops will just shut it down via satellite, and the milage thing as mentioned above .......it's gonna be a different world for sure , socialism here we come! I hope I'm long "gone" before that all happens!

It will interesting to see how they try to enforce this. Almost every car I own is "grandfathered" in all other ways; window tint, emission, etc.

They gonna try to make me put GPS units in each? The internal battery might get overcharged and blow, or it get dropped, oops!

Not to spoil the fun here, but I really do not see how this is feasable and worth the outrage and lawsuits. Not in America anyhow. Maybe in some more socialist countries with different constitutions, perhaps.
