Timming mark off

I have a 340 the timming with #1 plug set on high and the rotor set on # 1 my factory marks is about 2-3" away it think advanced any idels on this or why its like that I just got the car.

stick a thin screwdriver in the spark plug hole & you can feel the piston stop @ TDC check your marks from that , it is not uncommon for the marks to be wrong , which is why timing lights are often usless

Also make sure that the outer ring on the harmonic balancer has not slipped. Check the rubber between the inner and outer balancer rings. If it has slipped. STOP. Do not drive it untill you replace the balancer. At that time you can get a timing tape from a local performance shop and set the tdc yourself. Use Chryco's method.

I have used a piston stop and have done it 3 times. Still not starting.

so how do the marks line up using the piston stop ??

the orginal is before about 3" not at all close

Are you rotating the crank to the stop in both directions and finding the mid point, TDC ?

there is 5 degrees or so where the piston doesn't move , but if it is off by 3" you may have a slipped damper ring or a mismatched cover & damper , forget timing it using a light
