Why do previous owners remove the fender tag? Is there anyway to procure a replacement? The person I got the car from years ago said the original owner refused to part with the build sheet and fender tag. I contacted the original owners family (deceased) and they said if they ran across it they would call. They also brought up a question, "What's it worth to you?" What is it worth???? It's a 73 Cuda 340 with few options I can see, no A/c etc...

Well, it's worth something to you for sure and it depends on what you plan to do with the car. If you plan on selling the car, it would most certainly be worth more with those documents. If you just plan on keeping the car for yourself, make them an offer for them that you feel comfortable with. Unfortunately, they have you where they want you. If it were me, I would offer them $150 for them and see what happens.

I'm sorry, but that's funny. It may just be me, but if the owner refused to part with the fender tag and the build sheet, but was still willing to sell the car, then I'd refuse to part with my money.
But I agree with Matt, too. You're in a good faith position with the family here. A decent offer may just help with the incentive to "find" the tag and sheet. The way you've explained it makes me think they know where the tag and sheet are and want to feel out how much they might be worth to you.

That's why you start low.
I don't know guys I would not offers them anything, it should have come with the car when you paid for it, it is part of the car, that tag is not doing them any good, nor is going to do them any good in the future, specially if the original owner is no longer alive; But thats my opinion, and you know about opinions everyone has one!!

And I'm not going to disagree with your statement. The tag is part of the car. Personally, if I was the second owner of the car and the original owner refused to part with the tag, I would have refused to part with my cash. That attitude doesn't do the OP any good, though, as he bought the car with the tag already missing.
In this case, possession is 9/10th of the law. They possess the tag and can do anything they want with it, including destroy it, which does no one any good. A small cash offer in good faith isn't inappropriate, in my opinion. He could go in with guns a-blazing and explain to them that without the car, the tag is simply worthless to them. It is. But then, out of spite, they could destroy it, meaning it's now worthless to everyone involved.
Re-Cap Offered the fine family of the deceased $150.00 and requested they e-mail me photos of the tag/sheet. They demanded payment in full and stated they had no way to fax/e-mail etc...Smells like $-it!!!!!!!
