Thanks but I believe the VIN stamping is on the machined pad just above and to the right of the casting number. If it's from a 70 E body it should read something like: B 0 100001 (B for Hamtramck, 0 for 1970, and then the last six digits of the VIN). Sometimes it is not legible or very tough to read. Thanks again. You can PM me on this if you prefer.

71 18 spline trans
Thanks for posting the machined pad VIN picture. I think the RS stands for GTX, the 23 stands for a 2-door hardtop, the L stands for a 440 HP engine, and the 9 stands for 1969. I'm thinking the last six digits or so are the sequential serial number of the vehicle identification number. A lot of folks are looking for an 18-spline four speed. I'm sure you'll sell it, good luck!

Either someone has changed the tailshaft to the 70 model two shifter mount version or it was a very late built unit. It was installed in a 69 GTX per vin number. Post the vin number and maybe do a search and see what you come up with. The car may still be around and the owner would surely want to buy it. Post it on Moparts with vin number so it will be on the internet.

I think you're right about the tail shaft being changed or it being a very late built unit. The VIN appears to me to be RS23L9G109289. I believe that would make it an early 1969 unit. Nonetheless it is an 18-spline 4-speed transmission! Fastmark gave excellent advice in doing a search as the car may still be out there and the owner would gladly pay your price, or maybe another 1969 GTX 4-speed car owner who's car has a VIN very close to your transmission might want to have a 'date correct' transmission to their car.

Thanks you guy's are great at decoding. I don't think the tailshaft been swapped, I picked it up over 40 years ago, not that many parts back then. A23 spline housing uses the smaller bearing so couldn't be a 23 spline housing that was swapped. A lot of parts were produced years ahead of time. Bottom line is I don't know.

Spring is finally here so you might get some action. If you don't sell it in the amount of time that you expect AND you need to sell it, I'd drop the price a little.
