Oil Pan Removal on 318

What are the correct instructions for removing my oil pan. I want to look and see if there are any bits from the timing chain sprockets. I have the service manual and it does not look too bad but then I looked it up online and it says I have to lift the engine up a few inches to get it out. Which one is correct?

Yep! Until it hits the firewall. Drain the oil and use a USB camera.

I am wanting to change the gaskets. Oil leaks. However that's a great idea.that way if I have to change the timing chain, I only have change that rubber gasket in n the front once.

Since you have an oil leak there, you might as well drop the pan. You will need to jack up the engine, being careful the distributer cap doesn't hit the firewall. Also while you're in there, give the oil pickup scene a good inspection. If you find cam gear teeth in there, you know you're removing the timing cover next!
