What are the correct instructions for removing my oil pan. I want to look and see if there are any bits from the timing chain sprockets. I have the service manual and it does not look too bad but then I looked it up online and it says I have to lift the engine up a few inches to get it out. Which one is correct?

Since you have an oil leak there, you might as well drop the pan. You will need to jack up the engine, being careful the distributer cap doesn't hit the firewall. Also while you're in there, give the oil pickup scene a good inspection. If you find cam gear teeth in there, you know you're removing the timing cover next!

I had my oil pan off my 340 numerous times, should be no different on a 318. Drop the steering center link on both sides. Front bolts are tricky, bit doable with a universal adapter. I haven’t ever lifted the motor.

The above info is good.
I would still do both if you have a engine lift. so many times been there, done something, knew better, Would of should have could have. Way didn't I just do it in the first place!

Next thing you see something else and your cleaning and painting the K frame. Never fails it's always something.
