good morning, when replacing the distributor cap and rotor, should the direction of the rotor be in a specific position?

Assuming you didn't remove the distributor and not sure what kind of distributor you have, the rotor can only go on the shaft one way because of the flats and the cap can only go on the the housing one way because of the notch as shown in the pics. This happens to be a prestolite distributor.
Or some distributors have a notch in the shaft (see other pic).
