A buddy of mine has a 71 340 with the x-heads, he's willing to sell me, but is afraid to price it to me. It will probably need an rebuild kit. What would you value the motor at? I know it's a good get.

It came out of a 71 Cuda, and was a running son of a gun at one time. He said it's been setting for a while and ran good when it was pulled, but he said it would probably need a rebuild kit. He sold the Cuda, the buyer put a Crate motor in it, my friend ended up buying it back and still has the original 340. He's willing to sell to me but because we're friends he won't price it, wants me to make a fair offer. Could someone help me make him an offer that's fair for both of us? Thanks

I just sold the same engine except it was a `69 casting and I ended up getting $1,100 for it which was a little more then I paid for it several months prior. Detroit Craigslst has had a few lately and they have been listed for quite a while for around a grand. I have a `72 or 3 available with J heads that's disassembled on Craigslist right now for $650.

So, do you think $800 would be a fair offer between friends? A good 71 and before are getting kind of hard to find, and it would be a nice fit for my Challenger, instead of trying to dress up the little 318. The 340 was running good when the guy pulled it, and he bought a 8 to 10 thousand $$$ Engine and dropped it in the Cuda, was nothing wrong with the 340, he just had more money than he knew what to do with.

I think $800 would a reasonable friendly offer for one complete, needing a rebuild.

There's some who'll say it isn't, that you can get 'em cheaper, but a lot of the pricing depends on the area of the country. Round here 340's are priced about what DetMatt sold his for. 360's are easier to come by, cheaper to obtain, so a lot of folks 'round these parts build 360's.

We're in Missouri, and they are pretty hard to come by for us. I will offer $800, and just see what he says, if nothing else it will start the conversation.

Thanks, Men!

That's what I would do if I were you and it'd still be a good deal for you at a grand. Best of luck!

Thanks, I will let you know how it goes. Probably going early next week. This guy I'm talking to has 2 Cuda's, he's a Mopar nut, between him and my dad they made me fall in love with the Challengers, and Cuda's. He's a body and paint guy, so he has nice cars.

What's the best way to go, if I want to keep the 340 as close to the day it came out as I can. It there a kit better than others? I really don't think it needs a bunch of add on's. It was a bad mofo when it was in that cuda. I would just like to have in re-conditioned, more than upgraded. I know I ask a lot of questions, I'm just trying to pick the minds of those who have went before me.

Just use Michigan Brgs & light weight forged pistons with plasma moly rings , new rod bolts , have it rebalanced & upgrade the cam
