What kind of power does it take to get a 70 challenger into the 12s with a 340 ? 410 gears 4 speed. Street tire old school build

Not all that difficult but takes good parts selection, assembly and tuning. Check out the direct connection race bulletins for SB E body, they have builds and a layout of parts. Of course these are dated but you need to think of this as a system, everything MUST work together to include the engine, trans, U joints, drive shaft, tires, etc.

Back in the day a buddy and I built a 340 in a 74 Challenger with a mild cam, good intake and carb, headers and 31" slicks and ran 12.6 @ 109 mph. I think we were running 4.56 gears if I remember right and this was a 4 speed car.

No, that was like 30 years ago or more. There are lots of guys here and elsewhere who have build really great HP with a 340, my last one is a 416 stroker, makes like 500 hp and is a beast.

70 Chall offers some good old time hot rodding, workable advice.
Back in the day, I used to run the Mopar purple shaft cam (284 duration) in a 340, low gears, with ported 202 heads, carb tuning, and some sticky tires; and ran Low/mid 13’s without too much craziness. With the new cam technology available today, it should not be hard to go where you want to go!

Mine was originally a 340 car. Long gone when I bought it. I wanted more power so I opted out for HEMI power instead.
