If later in the future I wanted to build a big block and put it in my 70 Challenger. Would this be a good route to go?

Some people are telling me yes, and some are saying no because the block might could have a potential problem I’m not aware about.

You just need to take it to an engine builder/machine shop and have it evaluated as a core. If it’s standard bore it most certainly be worth having it sonic tested. It looks like it doesn’t have main caps?

IMO no . while the block may be Ok why build a small big block ? With a stroker kit you can get 430 ci with a streetable build using the 383 block .
The 400 block is stronger & A 440 block can get you 512 ci in a street build .
A stock 383 vs the 340 , the 340 is almost always faster , they have almost the same stroke , but the 340 has a lighter block & internals so all thing being equal 340s will out run a 383 so why pay the weight penalty to go slower ?

Got it totally makes sense! Thank you for input and knowledge. I will definitely pass on this and stick to getting a 340 in the near future.

Lots of options , get a 360 block virtually for free , 87-92 use roller cams from the factory & have the best 308 casting production heads , stroke it to 408 CI use the roller lifters with a better roller cam & you have a killer street small block , this way you can still use the mounts & trans , rad etc

I disagree, A 383 can be stroked to 493 (mine) Aluminum heads and water pump put you in the SB weight zone I believe.

As a SB guy forever there aint no sound like the 493. A mild reliable build puts you over 500 HP easy.

The problem with going to 490 ci in a low deck block is it really is now a race engine , the oil ring sits over the wrist pin & the piston is extremely short , it can be done & will live on the street for a while , I just prefer to have a more favorable rod ratio , a taller piston & the oils rings sealing !!
with similar parts in a 440 block you have 512 ci & more durability .
The 400 / 451 is awesome , strongest block & still have 1.81 rod ratio
To each his own
