70 Cuda fuel filler tube with dent

I'm not doubting for a second the indent, "Dimple" pictured MMC manual and Mopar Guy's car are "factory" and intentionally there. This is not some sort of random trunk dent.
The pictures I've included are from my late year 72 filler neck. It does have random trunk dent and on the back side (facing the tail panel) a similar smaller factory dimple. I have a second, early year '72 in my car, that is the same. Neither have the indent facing the trunk. I wonder if this is possibly a Los Angeles assembly plant vs Hamtramck thing.🤔

Oh picture

Your part pictures look awful shiny for old used parts. 😏

Seriously Mopar Guy, to me it looks like there is a year thing, part/build location thing, or combination of the two going on here. This picture is from my Oct built 72 Barracuda /6, currently installed in my car. The other crusty pictured one was from my 72 Cuda 340 built after that. Both of these cars were built in Hamtramck. I'm not sure there's a one size fits all answer to "the correct" tube. I've had both of these cars since the early 80s and the tanks were never replaced.

Fun fact, my Barracuda had the 4 vents to the side with the vent tube in the trunk. My Cuda had the 4 tubes to the front going to that little vent "box" up on the floor against the back seat metal.

As you know, Chrysler never seemed to do the same thing even on the same day.

Oh, did you notice your tube doesn't have that flat metal part running down the center of the inside of the tube?

That would be a whole other discussion on anti-slosh, tank venting, ECS, etc.

The picture I posted is the new tube.
The OP asked, “Is this dent in the fuel filler tube supposed to be there?”

The answer is, “Yes.”
