I posted early about my new valvetrain , push rods, rod measuring advice.
To be safe I talked to a couple shops including Duane Porter who suggested his technique for establishing a proper push rod length and preload.
To be sure (before I order push rods) I thought I would give hughes a call, well I got the biggest A-ho ever, yelling at me on the phone!!
I said I’m calling to confirm how much preload to put on bc I am getting numerous answers. I said I’m reading anywhere from a 1/2-1 full turn at zero lash, WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU GETTING THIS INFO!! IT BETTER NOT BE CHAT ROOMS AND FORUMS!!
I said well I calling to make sure I don’t wreck anything, how far down into the lifter will it be with your suggested 1.5 turns ? WELL THERES A 100 DAM QUESTIONS LIKE WHAT TIME OF ROCKER SET UP! I said prw , cut me off yelling again, I DONT GIVE A DAM ABOUT WHICH BRAND! DID I ASK YOU WHICH BRAND?
I told him he needs a new job and he better change his ignorant attitude for the next call, your having a bad day buddy after you answered you were!
Hung up on the pos!

Don’t listen to me….: But it sounds like a job for a really creative 1 Star Google Review, with all the gory details, and photos. Readers just love a good 1 star review, with photos. You might be surprised…..

Well I don’t have photos but i do have a good memory, he had me so pist off I forgot his name, A zero star review is coming and an email. Fk that A-ho!

I had a similar deal with them, salemen were assholes, went around with them with no results for about a month so I ordered about 5k worth of goods for a LA block, got everything from cnc motorsports, and ordered the cam from Howards. I didn't really like any other rocker assemblies I saw anywhere so I held off on ordering those well about 3 more weeks go by and Dave I believe was his name finally calls me and I told him my experience, he had no real answer for the holier than thou salesman or whoever was talking to me prior. But I did end up ordering the aluminum rocker set up they offer. got the rocker assembly in about a week. I see problem in there future.

Ya I will be looking elsewhere, I never would have called if my cam wasn’t from Hughes, others have said they ask for more preload. Knowing this I reached out to several experienced guys and mopar shops. As mentioned I was told one 1/2 turn to 1 full turn, this clown said 1.5 turns, the only one who said this much out of the 5/6 guys I talked to. He got so mad when I mentioned this and went on a screaming rant. I was just starting to tell him what I had for a rocker set , ratio and how I determined rod length but blew up again!
This guy needs to be dealt with ! Maybe he should go sweep the shop instead of answering calls.
I have always read& considered them to be one of the best mopar shops around and maybe they are but I an not supporting this pr1ck!

Dave has always been short fused and quick to tell you how damn dumb you are, whenever you call, and whatever you call about. And this was back 25 years ago, I believe he's even worse now in his old age. It's a shame, because he really is very knowledgeable with engines and mopar engines in particular. I built two big blocks with his help in the past, and it took some effort more than a few times to keep things civil when dealing with him. Like I said, its a shame.

Time to retire

Weird... I've had just the opposite experience with Hughes, including Dave. Built a small block using their cam and valvetrain two years ago and they were really helpful. Will be going back to them soon for an upcoming big block build.

I deal with dozens of different people every day ordering 10's of thousands of dollars of racing parts everyday. Sometimes I just brush it off as someone may just be having a bad day. Others times I just work them over with my charm. Lol. In the end, I have to work along with them everyday and just have to deal with the different personalities.
