Ready to install new windshield after cleaning and painting header and channel and need to reinstall the stainless header panel and a pillar molding.
Original header panel had a spongy like material that was flexible under the stainless header panel. Looked like it was designed to have a little give when the convertible roof was put up.

What would be recommended replacement material to be put under the stainless header panel?

The original material was spongy, yet was impregnated with a tar substance, probably to keep water out.
Was looking at a simple layer of clear silicone or window ribbon under the panel. What have other convertible owners used in this situation?
Suggestions welcome.
