Console, Door Trim/Woodgrain

Anyone know if the chrome trim pieces on the door panels and console are stainless steel under the chrome? Just wondering if the chrome pitting could be removed and the SS polished?

They are just chromed pot metal. I've got a spare top plate that has a chunk corroded off of it. I was going to use it since the top plate needs to be modified to fit the reproduction consoles. I'm not going to use it now. I need to find a nice one to grind on.
