A buddy of mine has a 74 Challenger and today we were trying to decode the fender tag with a book my wife bought me called "Dodge and Plymouth Muscle Car Red Book" by Peter C. Sessler. This book has listings of what the fender code's are supposed to be but we had little to no luck matching things up. Here's the run down on the fender tag starting on the upper left reading to the right

1st line 668
2nd line M26-N76-R35-V7X-L2
3rd line G54-C64-G74-J25-L31-M21
4th line V1K-1-B43-C16-C56-C11
5th line KG2-A666-000-429-E34741
6th line E44-D34 then the vin # JH23G4B397538 which matches the vin plate found on the left side of the dash.

The only codes we were able to match in this book were R35 am-fm radio, G54 Chrome remote control left mirror, G74 chrome remote outside left and manual right racing mirrors, J25 3 speed wipers, V1X black vinyl roof, C16 console, KG2 frost green metallic, and D34 Torqueflite trans. That leaves several codes unanswered.

If anyone could help we'd appreciate it.

Oh ya one more thing. According to this book I have there were only 11,354 74 Challengers made and the sequence # starts at 100001. His vin ends in 397538 which seems odd considering there were only supposed to be 11,354 made and it is supposed to start at 100001. Anybody know what's up with that? He wonders if his car was one of the last ones made since it shows April 74 on the door tag.

B43=Front disc rear drum brakes, C56=Bucket seats, I don't show a C11, the C64 should be a G64 which is your rh outside mirror, strange that they put the code for the dual mirrors and each mirror seperatly. L31=fender turn signal, M21=drip trough moldings, M26=Wheel lip moldings, N76= coolant recovery system, E44=318 2bbl, V7X=V-class, vinyl/fabric 50/50, black. 429 is your build date, L2? I think your missing a number here maybe under the screw and it should have something to do w/lighting.
Not sure about some of the other codes 1 is order #.
They made 16,437 Challengers in '74 and they made them all the way till about June/July of `74. Chrysler started there sequence #'s at 100001 every year.

Thanks a bunch for the info. Sounds like my book isn't much better than fire starting material, LOL... I also thought it was odd how the mirror's were listed. I'll look again at the questionable #'s as the tag wasn't easy to read and my eyes aren't great anymore so I could have read it wrong.
