Thinking about running g a Max Wedge crossram on my new 512 build.
Now my questions:
What horsepower and torque differences would I expect over a big, modern, single plane intake with a 1250 or bigger Dominator carb.
Are there any out there for sale and for how much?
I have read that the earlier ones were prone to cracking around the bolt holes. True or ?
If there are some cracks there, are the cracks repairable and where should I inspect for them?
What are these intakes worth un modified?
I have seen one that has been polished "back in the day" by what I could only categorize as a moron, that ground off all of the casting and date code numbers.
So lastly, what is a serviceable unmodified intake worth?
Depending on the price, what would the polished, no numbers intake be worth and is it worth chasing down?
My car is a 72 Challenger, 512, 727 with a brake, relocated Super Stock springs, Max Wedge ported aluminum heads, TTI step headers, dual 3" exhaust, 4.10 gears, drag radials, solid roller cam approximately 270 @ .050, high 600 lift, (haven't ordered it yet), and I have 5 convertors
from 2500 to 5200 stall on the shelf.
Limited street and once a month or so track use and it better haul a☆☆!
Has anyone actually compared the Max Wedge intake to modern big single planes on the dyno or track?
I have my opinions, but no firm data.
I have several Dominators and a Super Victor, so is the Max Wedge intake gonna actually run faster, or just have it for cool points?
I haven't even heard of anyone having the linkage for a Max Wedge deal either, but I can fab it in my shop if I find an intake.
THANKS FOR ANY INFO!!!
Looking for hi 9s on the motor, and will prolly see what it will run with a plate (or two) system if my huevos hold up!

@TIMINATOR , A&A transmissions (yes, that's correct) used to fabricate the Max Wedge crossram intake. I believe they still sale a lot of the bits and pieces. Certainly the Max Wedge intake would have it for the "cool" factor. And the intake did help with the supercharging effect above 5,500 rpm. Which is between your planned maximum torque and horsepower range
To this day, I firmly believe the Max Wedge engines made more horsepower than Chrysler admitted to. But the Ramchargers pretty much abandoned them once the Hemi was built in '64 with good reason.
I have no first hand experience with an actual Max Wedge (or 426 Hemi). Too rich for me as I opted to retire early and enjoy life sooner. But in my humble opinion with what I have worked with successfully over the years, I think other than the "cool" factor, you'd be better off with the aforementioned single plain highrise intake and big four barrel. They have served me well. With the crossram, you're seriously looking at $3500 to $4000 for the setup and I'm not convinced you'd make any more horsepower. Certainly not enough to offset the cost to benefit ratio.
But I see your intrigue and love your thinking, it sure would look very COOL! I'm eagerly waiting other racer's opinions! 😀

I think the stock heads were the bottle neck that limited the outer limits. I remember drooling over the both 426's in the magazines in skool I mean school. While the girls where competing for attention. They lost to the magazines.
Here again to rich for my blood at the time. I'm not an expert on any of the above, 426,s or woman!!!!

Timinator is modifying the heads, so I see his interest in the Max Wedge Crossram . While it would look pretty awesome, I'm still not sure it's worth it. Hoping other racers will chime in soon!

Me and my flowbench put the 440 ports bottleneck at the flange.
Look at a 360/340, or small block chevy, the port opening at the flange is the same size!
Look at the Speedmaster catalogue flow #s for the smallblock Ford, chebbie, mopar, and 440 heads, despite the 440s intake valve that is near a quarter inch larger, the flow #s are nearly the same.
BUT they put a lot of metal around the port to open them up to nearly max wedge size!
I have ported stock 440 irons, saw the gains, then raised and widened the ports as much as practical and saw serious gains. Aftermarket aluminum manifolds typically have enough extra metal on the top to raise them to what the port new opening is.
I will post the bowl ported #s and then the Max Wedge port flow#s.
I asked Speedmaster why the Max Wedge port opening wasn't an option and was told that there are very few intakes available. I said "then why don't you make one?"
I was then told that the porters and builders are opening them up. It was just the non racers that don't!
Food for thought....
I guess I will run the Super Victor and an 1150 Dominator cause I have them, but see what I run into at the swap meets!
I would like to hear from someone that has run the Max Wedge stuff though.
As our car freak amigo Jay Leno said: "I am lucky enough to have F**k it money so if I see something I want but don't need, I can say F**k it, and buy it cause it's cool."
