Newbi with 1970 Challenger

Hi everyone just acquired a 1970 Challenger with slant 6 which I’m so stoked and surprised I got this car for what I paid for it but it’s a long ways from getting on the road. Previous owner stated it was in the process of being restored and something happened to the dash that it caught on fire and charred the dash and engine bay. Didn’t get hot enough to warp things and Body seems solid and mostly straight, definitely dings and dents hear and there, but major rust is in the trunk which I need to replace the trunk pan and roof corners and cowl need attention. Other than that I got a ways away and appreciate any help along the way. My background am mechanicaly inclined, can pretty much fix anything on the car including doing body work. Worked at a performance engine shop before so I’m good with building engines and I’ve owned multiple classic cars, mostly AMCs and mopars!

Regardless of what you do or change, take very special care of the dash VIN plate, and/or fender tag (if still present)

It looks like an SE interior, nice option. But not the SE back window, too bad.

The floor pans looks really good, perhaps too good to be original, but no one will care about that. The floor pans are often a challenging and difficult thing to repair, for some. The trunk bottom is also a common rust area, even in dry areas of the planet.

Many choose to NOT place a vinyl top on their restorations, after having to resolve the roof rust they caused. But the modern-day adhesives are much improved over the OEM ones, so once repaired, and the vinyl top properly installed, the chance of new rust is pretty small.

Too bad about the hole cut into the hood. But it can be repaired if you're on a budget, and repaired in a way that is hard to see once painted.

The dash pad may have been recovered, at some point, as I don't recall OEM having that stitching I think I see in your image.

All in all, you got a nice looking project, there. Congrats on your acquisition.
 
The fender tag is not there unfortunately and the hood I wish the PO didn’t do that. Idk if it came with vinyl top but I probably won’t put one back on if it did. I’ll try to be on a budget with this car but most likely it’ll go way over. Do have an engine that I might put in, a 6.4l hemi that I have been saving for another project but more tempted to put a 440 in it for simplicity.
 
You may be right about the vinyl top. I thought I caught a glimpse of the holes for the vinyl top trim in the left-rear image, but after looking at it again, I think you're right. Also, it's common for the top-to-quarter panel transition to look rough once the vinyl top is removed, so I may have leaned toward the vinyl top conclusion.
 
When you start to disassemble. Take picture and and measurement. Like of the belt molding clip location on the door and 1/4 window. That will be a help to others.
There are others here that can advise on all aspects of what you are going to encounter.
Looks like the original drivers door. Is the vin sticker still there? build date?
