Newbie with a 71 challenger A/C car with no heat

Hello there. I'm new to the forum. I just picked up a nice 71 Challenger R/T. It looks to be an original A/C car (has A/C control on dash and heater control valve under hood). My problem is that I am not getting any heat to the interior of the car. I've verified that the heater control valve is working. The heater hoses are hot on either side of the valve. My blower motor works as I can feel cold air blowing through the defrost vents. Could there be an internal issue with the heater box or heater core?

Yes, probably an internal issue. If the heater hoses are hot on both sides you are getting flow through the heater core. I would check to see if the heater cable is operating the door inside the heater box.

could also be a blockage from a mouse nest or something... the a/c box is a complicated device, maybe you can get one of those bore scopes to look around before you pull it.

thanks Adam. Can you give me a basic explanation of how the heater controls work for an A/C car? The dash has buttons (not sliders) for AC/Heat/Defrost. Since these are buttons and not slides, I would think they are vacuum controlled and not cable?

I do not remember, but if you look up at the back side it will be clear if it is vacuum operated. Maybe that is your issue. My Challenger is non-ac, and cable operated.

Edit: it does appear to be vacuum operated. Do you have a small vacuum pump? Should be easy to run a few tests on the lines..

Also, make sure the vacuum line is hooked up from the check valve to the engine.

Do you have a better pic of your hose connections and routing. AC car right?

Ill get a pic as soon as i can. It has the a/c controls, the diverter valve, hose barbs on the firewall for a/c lines. No other a/c components under hood for a/c.

Here is what i could quickly grab for pics. I dont see the “check valve” that was mentioned earlier. I only see a vacuum line coming off the manifold to the power brake booster. There is another fitting at the booster but its capped off.
