Power Steering Gear Box

Hello Group, I have a 72 340 Challenger Rallye, with power steering. There is excessive play steering wheel to gearbox. Car is all original still but I need to resolve this issue. Can someone recommend a good overhaul kit if this will solve the problem or am I going to just have to buy a replacement box? Thank you.
 
You’re better off buying an Borgeson box, you can rebuild the old one, it’ll just end up the same way in a short while.
 
If it’s original I would try to keep it. If it’s only loose, and not leaking like the Exxon Valdez, You should definitely try adjusting the adjustment screw. Snug it up, and back it off a little. If it’s too tight it will bind when you turn sharply. It may take two or three times to get it right.

Also the column to box coupler can be very sloppy and they don’t last very long after rebuilding, so I would recommend a steering u-joint replacement similar to this: https://www.speedwaymotors.com/shop/steering-shaft-u-joints~14-15-574-31185

I don’t remember the diameter and spline count, but I replaced the Mopar coupler on two of my Dodge trucks and it was a great improvement.

Doesn't it take decades to wear out (newly rebuilt) steering box? Buy then, we won't be driving gasoline vehicles? ha ha.
Nope, once they are rebuilt, they don’t last. It’s like adding sawdust to a transmission, an old salesman trick.
 
Did you just replace the gearbox or did you do the 99063 kit with box, pump, hoses and coupler...? Thank you.
I bought the box and hoses from Summit Racing with a 10% off deal and free shipping. I bought the coupler through Bergman Auto Craft. I bought a rebuilt pump through Yearone.

The Borgeson box is a huge upgrade.

Thank you sir, unfortunately it does leak heavy intermittently.

If you don't care about having the original box, definitely get the Borgeson box. Contact Peter at Bergman and he will set you up with everything you need! Great guy and he's making good stuff for our Mopars!

Any info on were I can get a steering box rebuild kit for my AAR Cuda It has T/A G-2267600 it has R11 below the top # and 2230 below that one stamped on the box

I asked this question here a while ago, a few guys weighed in and suggested I go with a Borgeson box for my 72 Challenger. I bought the Peter Bergman kit (includes Borgeson box) it installed and works beautifully. I did box and store my original parts. Not the answer to your question but maybe helpful. Take care.
 
I sent my box to firm feel for rebuild because of excessive play and it came back with the same amount of play .When I contacted them they insinuated that they don't make mistakes.I had it looked at by a 77 year old retired mopar mechanic (worked on Mopars since he was 17) and adjusted the pump over a full turn and told me he's never seen a rebuild badly adjusted like that .I e-mailed Firm Feel (out of Vancouver Washington) just to let them know so it would not happen to someone else and told them I was not seeking compensation,they did not even return a reply. Just to let you guys know.By the way I even turned the set screw another 1/4 turn and plan on another 1/4 turn for alittle firmer feel

Is it too late to get your money back?
 
It was during covid and I paid extra to get it back as I was worried not to get it returned. The first time I asked permission to turn the set screw so I wouldn't lose a warranty they never got back to me.After I turned it 3 1/4 turns,I went to Sam (the mopar guy) he turned it a whole rotation and as I said I plan on turning it another 1/4 turn but right now am happier just driving my car without so much play.Even after my e-mail to tell them ,so it wouldn't happen to another client,I did not receive a rely. In other words I will never go back,and do not want anything( refund or repair)from them
 
I believe the dad turned ownership to his son, he’s running it into the ground.
 
yep, I jumped his **** for not responding. He said I was one rude dude., :lol: bought my latest stuff from PST aka Kanter and Borgeson. Funny how a second generation taking over can be so blind about stuff.
