replace ignition switch

trying to replace the ignition switch...according to the shop Manuel the entire steering column has to be pulled. Is there another way????just went through loosening the column to link to new steering box. real pita

You can do it. It's still not fun. You'll have to remove the obvious tomato can and then eventually you'll get to the lock plate and it needs to come off. It's held on by a pin that Miller Tool C4113 makes simple to remove, but you can use a punch and hammer which is pretty crude. Just be careful! And of course the shaft is going to be in the middle of everything. So you can see why they suggest removing the whole column.

It seems like a daunting task at first but just take it a step at a time as outlined in the videos and you'll do fine. I felt the same way at first when I started tearing into my column, but it's really satisfying when it's all back together. And I agree, the special tool(s) called for in the shop manual aren't really necessary.

just watched a video..got the turn signal off..next. removed 3 screws holding the next part of the column..how is this removed????? video did not show how

I lost my keys and had to pull my ignition switch on my 70 Cuda to take it to a locksmith. It's been a while but I remember the only special tool I needed was a steering wheel puller with long bolts to pull the 'crush can'.

I've used another roll pin to push it out the other side so I could get the grips on it.

Yes easier to work on out of the car.

watched the entire video.. still need to remove the last part before I can reach the ignition switch. Video says to put on nut and tap with hammer--hahahaha--nothing happened..HOW do I get the piece off===did remove snap ring. do I have to pull entire steering column??????

I don't find removing the column helps one bit if you're just going to replace the ignition switch. Being bolted into the car helps hold everything while you take off the parts needed to do the job.

installing new ignition switch--71 Challenger, RALLEY DASH/ NEW HARNES. new harness ing 29-28. old harness and new harnesnnimg.26-25. big red is hot? and blk ground. the old harness has two thin red wires connected to a device in the hub--could not unscrew it. they go n the two places at the end of the female plug--what do they do. Michael 71 challenger

took column loose from the steering box....pushed it forward....no need to remove roll pin or any thing else. switch is out
