I just got my car put back together after restoration a 70 cuda 440, starts up great when cold, but after it runs a while and gets up to temp I shut it off and try to restart it and it cranks really slow, almost like the battery is dead and won't start. But after it sets awhile and cools off it starts right back up. It has new everything battery, starter relay, alt, starter 2nd one I've tried, both battery cables. Could it be the cheap aftermarket battery cables not being a heavy enough gauge? And does anybody know what gauge cables it should have on it? The negative is a 4 gauge but don't see any markings on the positive. Any help please!

What starter are you using? Are you running manifolds or headers? The factory starters can act up when they get too hot....when they are surrounded by hot headers. Also, you need to check your timing. Having the timing too far advanced can create an issue like that.

Starter is a duralast brand (autozone) it's the 2nd one that I've tried, local mechanic told me the same thing about the starter getting hot, it has the stock hp manifolds on it. I will double check the timing and see where I'm at on that. Thanks burdar.

Also recheck all of your connections in the starting circuit. A lot of things get painted when restored. You need good grounds as well as positive connections. Remove each wire from the battery to the starter and make sure you have bare metal contacts. Run a ground from the block to the firewall or fender apron. As burdar says, make sure the timing is not too far advanced. Unless you bought your cables from the 99 cent store, they should be fine as long as they were recommended for the car. The positive cable is a Mopar fitment only as the cable has 3 leads. 2 to the starter and one to the relay. 7074440cable.jpg

Check the gap between the reluctor & pick up coil in the dist too , it should be .008 & is rarely set properly when new
