I need a tip on removing the lock rod on the door handles without tearing anything up. Do they pop out of the little plastic clips on the latch mechanism?

The handle rod had a plastic clip that rotates to unlock it then the rod easily slides out. The lock rod has a bend on the top but is inserted into a plastic clip on the bottom that I see no trick to. I pull on the rod with needle nose pliers but it seems that it would break the clip if I pull harder. Should I be working on the end nearest the door handle or the latch? I knew that you had been doing some work on yours and hoped you could help. Thanks.

My clip you had to first slide it up then pull the rod out.The plastic clip locks the rod so it wont fall out,if you just pull on the rod you will break the plastic clip. The clip swollows the rod.
