1970 'Cuda Restoration Project

Here is my story...

It started 5 years ago when I saw Vanishing Point for the first time that I knew I had to get a 1970 Challenger R/T 440/4-Speed. So I and started researching and looking at them online. After learning how rare they are I knew it would take a long time of looking and a lot of money to get one. I never had any luck in finding one but I did find a '66 Mustang around Feb. 2012, it was an all original, complete car, that turned over for $700. So that became my project. I worked on that with my Dad getting it running and driving for the next 9 months. I just put the Challenger on hold and figured it would have to come later in life once I had a bundle of money saved up. Then our air compressor took a dump after several years of punishment. So my Dad started hunting for a new one. He found one on Craigslist for $200 and when he called about it the guy told him he also had a '70 'Cuda for sale. We went down to pick up the compressor at a storage locker and when he opened the door that whole thing was filled with the parts. The motor, transmission, trim, seats, grill, everything. So then he openned the next locker over and there was the 'Cuda...completely stripped down and primered. He took most of the car apart to get the body work done and had not started putting it back together after the body shop was done. So we talked a little bit about it and he told us he was going to list it on Craigslist to sell it before he moved out of the state. So we talked a bit more, loaded up the compressor, and drove home. On the trip home my Dad and I couldn't stop talking about the car. As soon as I got home I listed my Mustang for sale and called the guy that night and every couple days for 2 weeks to keep him from listing it for sale. After two weeks the Mustang sold and I drove it down to Sacramento to the buyer. I called the guy with the 'Cuda that day, told him I had the cash in hand, and picked it up two days later! :icon_biggrin:

It's a '70 Barracuda assembled in Los Angeles, California. It was a 318/auto originaly. It came with a 451 Stroker/4-speed though. The body work is completely done. Still sorting the parts and tools from the garbage. So far it looks like all the major parts are there besides a couple things.

So far we got the motor and transmission in, almost all the trim back on, seats in, and currently we are sorting out the wiring harness.

I never really researched any Barracuda info or looked for any for sale, I knew what they were but I was having a hard enough time finding a Challenger so a 'Cuda was the LAST thing on my mind, they were just out of reach to me. I figured if it took this long to find a Challenger then it would take 5x as long to find a 'Cuda and it would probably be double the price. To me the 'Cudas were up in the stratosphere while I was down on earth searching for a Challenger.

Never did I think I would own a 1970 'Cuda at 20 years old. To me this is the score of the century! Just everything about these cars has been built up from reading stories and magazine articles and they have become legendary to me. :icon_pray:

When I found the Hurst Compition/Plus with the pistol grip in one of the boxes and I couldn't believe I was holding it. It's so awesome!

Thats awsome! I purchased my Challenger project last summer. The difference is I will be 51 years old next month. I know what your saying about the pistol grip. My car was all in apart with everything piled into it. When I was taking everything out at the guys place who was selling it, I remember rooting through all the stuff and finally pulling out the postol grip, held it in the air and said "I'll buy it"!! I drive a little 4wd Suzuki SX4 and I keep the pistol grip with me at all times. Never leave home without it. I hope to have my project done by the time snow flies 2013. Good luck with your project. Very, very cool car!!

Great story, hope you don't missing to much and especially of those hard to find and expensive parts, I understand that about the Pistol Grip I have a spare in my tv-room.

Got a little bit of the wiring harness sorted out. That's about it until the weather get's a little better.

Right now it blows.

I haven't updated you guys in a while!

Removed the entire wiring harness and dash. I repaired and checked out the entire harness. It wasn't too bad but it had a few issues. The dash had a little rust starting so I removed it and I am almost finished media blasting it. The dash pad is in great shape, just a little primer overspray from the body shop. No cracks though.

Got the engine to turn over a while ago and run for a little bit but the wiring for this electronic ignition has been a hassle for the past few weeks. So after a new ballast resistor and starter relay and a couple hours of wiring work today it is starting and running like a champ!

I ordered wheels and tires last month and had to wait about 2 weeks for them to get here. They look SICK! The day Summit got them in I went down and picked them up, already all mounted and balanced, and bolted them on as soon as I got home! That is when I realized I needed two wheel studs and an axle seal. Two wheel studs were reverse thread and the drivers side axle is leaking fluid. The axle seal and studs should be on by tomorrow.

All this means nothing without pictures!

Tomorrow I will get a ton of pictures together of the progress and post them up!

Pictures as promised. Better late than never!

I took the front half of the heater box off today to find that some type of rodent had been nesting in it. A nice cozy nest made from bucket seat padding, complete with droppings! The Shop-Vac made short work of it.

The wiring in the engine bay is almost ready for wire loom. Just need to sort out a few more connections.

Yesterday I had to take the 4-speed tunnel out because the floor wasn't cut out enough and the shifter rods were not going in. I got the rods to fit today and cleaned up the the floor pan so now everything can go back in.

I planned on getting some more overall shots today but the weather started turning ugly pretty quick so that put a wrap on my day.

Well I was prepping the windshield channel for paint and was planning on putting the windshield in but I came across a pretty bad bondo cover-up. The passenger side channel had about a 6" hole that went into the cowl. Whoever did the work just shoved some plastic bags inside the cowl and loaded bondo on top of them to build up the channel again. Pretty lame but I'm glad I found it now and not a couple years from now after it started eating throught the firewall. Still have some more to do but it got dark so we called it a day.

I blasted it first to really get a good look at what we had to work with. After it's all welded and ground down I'm going to fill it with lead and shape it real nice.

I also got everything off the inner firewall to get that coated. Pedals, column, heater box...everything. Almost ready to start spraying that. For the inside I am going with a matte black bedliner. The inner firewall, roof, and floor pan. I'll get some before and after pictures on here for you guys. I am trying to get the whole inside coated by the end of the week.

Also I figured out that I have the wrong Hurst shifter. It's the E-body handle but the wrong mechanism. So that kinda put a damper on getting it together to drive so while the dash was out I figured might as well do the inside the right way while it's mostly apart. That led me into the windshield channel so now the whole interior is out as well as the grill, the front bumper, and the passenger fender is off while the channel gets repaired. I don't want the car to be in this many pieces for too long! :icon_neutral:

Alright I got a couple updates.

Got some of the panels painted and the firewall coated. My Dad did most of the painting. I am on the take-down, prep, and reassembley. Still much funner than when I was younger and the gopher and my Dad saying, "Hey, Go-pher this...go-pher that." :icon_biggrin:

When the fender came off to repair the windshield channel most of the front end came off with it so we figured we could take advantage of that and spray all the pieces while they were off the car real nice, put them back on, then give the whole car one final coat to even out any shade variations.

As you can see pretty large bugs love the smell of fresh paint. :angry7:

In the last few pictures the bumper looks sort of brown. That is a lighting issue with the photo. It is matte black just like the firewall.

I also restored my heater box on Friday but I didn't take any pictures of it today. I'll post some up tomorrow along with a few others shots of the car.

Well everything all back together and wrapped up. I am leaving for Navy basic training tomorrow morning so the 'Cuda is in storage mode for now. It will be a while before any more progress is made on her. My plan is to stockpile parts while I'm away, then when I get some time off, come home and finish the car.

A couple major things I am planning on are a Gear Vendor for the A-883, posi for the rear end, Wilwood disk conversion for the rear, Wilwood setup on the front, and some sort of aftermarket suspension. I'm not too sure about the front end yet but for the back end I was thinking about a triangulated 4-link with coilovers, possibly the Street Lynx, and a nice fat anti-sway bar.

For the front I'm still deciding between the Alterkation or just updating the stock setup with some Hotchkis equipment. The third option would be a full air bar kit from Air Ride Technologies front and back.
