hello

Im new to older cars and was wondering how a fusible link works and also what happens if I remove it and replace with straight wire and is there a modern replacement chip fuse maybe

and most important what size does a 74 challenger 360 take

They come in different wire diameters. Just need to match yours. Available on eBay from Mopar dealers for around $10. for OE. Just get a couple so you have a spare in the glove box.

It burns out if there is a major short in the cars wiring. Using straight wire will give you a good chance of catching your car on fire. This will normally cause your ammeter to start melting. Find the short, fix it, put in a new fusible link, and carry and extra as been advised.

You should use the same size fusible link that the car came with.

Correct The fusible link is a type of fuse. If your car blew a 10 amp fuse you wouldn't want to use a 20 amp fuse. The point of the fuse is to prevent damage to the wiring or electrical accessories.
