looking for a set for a 1970 challenger with 383 slapstick auto. anyone out there make a set that fits right and without any tubes bending so things don’t touch starter and steering componets ? All the reading seems that all header companies can’t seem to make a set that is trouble free?? You would think after 50 years SOMEONE would have done them correctly?

I used Hedman Street Headers #75060, 2” primary into 3” collector, on my 74, 383 auto slap stick with a mini starter. These are 5 piece headers and i had no clearance issues. However I don't think they make these anymore. Before I had a normal set of headers, 1 5/8" into 3" and they also fit good. But i forget what brand they were.

Go TTI like Moparleo sent. These are the best I’ve ever used on a big block
They are pricey but, you get what you pay for with these. Good stuff. Running a 5 speed Tremec.

can you use the stock starter or do you still have to dump 300 for the small one ?

I’m running a smaller gear ruduction on my 440. I’ve never tried the factory starter since this build in 2009-10. TTI should be able to let you know. I happen to have a few pics on my phone. I don’t know if it will help but, here they are.

I used the set that Headman says fit. All I can say is don't do it. To put them on I had to remove the steering gearbox with the engine sitting on the K member outside of the car. I had to dent the headers on the driver side for clearance on the torsion bars and the starter. Biggest regret for the car is using them. I am going to hate the day when the starter goes out.

I hate that you had that much trouble. Back in the day when we were kids and drove em everyday, we used to wrap the starter with thick gasket material. Probably asbestos.....but after changing a a couple, that helped keeping it cool.
ive really never had those issues. Even using the white blackjack headers. Just had to insulate a couple plug wire boots.
Also, I haven’t used Headman headers before.

thanks for the photos you would think spending 1000.00 for a set you should not have to spend 300.00 for a starter as well.

All I can say is start putting them on with the drivers side first. That way if it doesn't fit then you won't have to remove the passenger side one as well.

I’ve only dropped in a bb once without the heads on and 6 times with them on. I find the job easier to have the heads on when dropping in. That’s just my experience though. Headers always seem to a bit of a struggle for one reason or another. Send some pics when you’re buttoned up.

TTI is so accurate that they make a different set of headers for the B & RB block no other company does that .
Good luck with the Hedmans you will need it !

Like they always say, you get what you pay for. I've never seen any brand of headers fit better than TTI.

Drivers side was a bit to close to the steering box, so I called and talked to dave c and he sent a part 78538 that fit right in with enough room I was happy with it.
