i'm installing a msd 6al and need a hot wire from the switch can i use the old positive wire that went to the + side of the coil

Welcome!

To answer your question: No. That wire comes from the ballast resistor and is only full 12V+ during cranking. It's also excessively noisy, electrically speaking. You can tap off the 12V+ side of the resistor itself.

you want the blue wire at the ballast that is constant 12v switched .
