Need a little help. About a week ago, I heard my rockers become a bit noisy. Recently rebuilt engine with Break In Oil was doing fine. Little over 400 miles thought I needed to change the in Oil. Changed the oil and filter, added 5W-30 Synthetic oil with an STP filter. Started the car and chatter became louder with near zero oil pressure. Thought it was the oil, changed to conventional with no luck. Shut the engine and put the car in the garage. Have been driving this car without any issues until now. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

70 Cuda
440 six pack
Miele HV pump installed when rebuilt
10-30 with a WIX filter. 5W-30 is for later model engines... Try before you pull it...just a thought, man

Without spinning the crankshaft with running the pump, you're not going to get oil to both rocker arms. And you'll only get it to one rocker arm if the holes in #4 camshaft bearing just happen to be lined up. Every Melling HV pump I've installed used the same bolts as the factory pump.

It is accurate to say that if you don’t see the oil flowing on top of each head that you have not fully primed the engine.

Ok, spent Saturday with my son trying to diagnose what the problem may be. Marked and removed the distributor, cam drive gear and put a priming rod in the oil pump. In reverse or forward, not a drop of oil getting to the lifters, which were bone dry. Ran the drill for priming for over 15 minutes and nothing. Removed the oil pump and inspected, nothing different than the new one I had purchased.

Bought a video endoscope from Amazon ($35) and put the probe in the oil pan . After a bit of an adjustment, I believe I saw the pick up laying flat in the oil pan. Removing the pan to confirm what I saw today.

When the machine shop rebuilt the engine, not sure if they tac spot weld the threads or put thread lock to the engine. I think the pick up tube was loosening up and the oil may have barely kept it in its place. At the beginning of this post, I mentioned that I heard chattering but though it was time to change the break in oil. Once the old oil was removed, the pick up fell in the pan.

So far that's my theory
I have read that when installing the oil pump and the pick it is recommended that you put small tack welds on pick up tube at the attach points. This alleviates any travel of your pick-up tube.
