Well, at wits end. Just ordered a new agm 1000cca. Red top is loosing charge quickly so i figure with this many re-charges from my C-Tek...its done. Ordered an XS 1150cca from summit. Will try that tuesday. When i added the #2 ground from trunk battery to the block it spun over great and fired right up.
Now... the starter will barely turn it over with 13V. It would start on first turn when i installed the new ground. So i get home from work a few days later and starts but dies (pump accelarater 3 times, starts then dies, trash in carb) , trash and fungus in race gas, 50/50 race and pump. cleaned carburetor needle valves and jets, blew air through the metering block. changed the squirters to one size larger(help with the stumble) and the jets a little smaller. It was a litlle rich and stumbling at tip in.
Charge battery!
again, hard to turn initially but then spins better but not good, No Start
msd 6al3, did the test for spark ( coil wire disconnect and short the dist wires and i had spark at the coil wire). hooked everything up normal and removed a plug to check spark my way... spun engine over and no spark at the sparkplug. So i changed to a spare msd box and same result no change.
Consult unreliable/reliable internet. Found a thread that mentioned the switched red wire and loss of 12v when starting will not signal the msd to send voltage to the coil. Sure enough, the voltage on my switched wire drops to 6V when starter is engaged, but it was starting before and i have not changed anything on the wiring side...YET!
Can a bad battery cause the drop when starting or is that drop normal?
getting real close to doing a frieburger on it! Dont do it right, just get it running!

No it was definitely trash in the carb, it would start but only run if i kept pumping the squirters. It ran after i released starter switch.
I am replacing the battery first, seems to me two attempts to start should not kill the battery. I am not counting out the starter either. If it was easier to get to i would run a new hot to the starter. The factory wiring is pretty hacked up from previous owner, i am sure it made sense to him.
My Winter project is now aftermarket wiring, having lighting issues anyway.

So, in the end i ran Msd box power + and - directly to the new battery in the trunk with #10 stranded. I grounded the msd box to the chassis and block. Installed 1150cca XS power battery. #2 wire from Batt disconnect to starter, #2 wire from battery - to engine block. So overall better grounding but most of all the cranking amps really spin it.
My 800cca red top tested good but i would say barely, it was discharging quick if you ask me.
Now on the the Brake lights, i have parking lamps but need brake lights
