Where do you get a spring for the lower rad hose on a 440. I have looked for the hose with the spring and can't find one. Any suggestions.

You can buy a universal flex hose from an auto parts store and use the spring from it with your 440 hose. I have had to do that to make things correct on a car. It costs up to $15 for the flex hose. It is very possible to find a good spring at a junk yard. They are in most of the lower small block Chevy hoses that are found in vans and trucks.

Are that many people having problems with hose collapse?

The only lower hoses I have found can easily be squeezed shut by hand. They are very soft. I don't think a spring will hurt. If it collapses 20% that is 20% less coolant flowing so any collapses will degrade cooling would it not?
