You can buy a universal flex hose from an auto parts store and use the spring from it with your 440 hose. I have had to do that to make things correct on a car. It costs up to $15 for the flex hose. It is very possible to find a good spring at a junk yard. They are in most of the lower small block Chevy hoses that are found in vans and trucks.
The only lower hoses I have found can easily be squeezed shut by hand. They are very soft. I don't think a spring will hurt. If it collapses 20% that is 20% less coolant flowing so any collapses will degrade cooling would it not?
