After a lot of research I'm going with 245/45/17 on 17x8 rims 4 1/2" bs all around.
I wanted to go with 255's but it would be close to the front fenders and didn't want to take the chance. Every car is a little different and what fits in one car may not fit on another. Also what fits on one side may not fit on another side.

What exactly is the goal to fit the largest 17" rim that will work on a 74 Challenger ? Is the cars suspension modified in any way, like raised for clearance ? Is this strictly cosmetic ?

I would go with 245 up front but wider in the back. I got 18 inch wheels with 295 in the back with stock suspension.

I run 275/40ZR17s on all 4 corners of mine. Stock suspension, lowered a bit in front, saggy leafs (need replacing) in rear. 17x9 rims 0mm offset (5" backspace)
