Water pump install - 71 383 engine

Putting in a new water pump with my new engine rebuild.

Its been along time, is the hole for overflow, oil or air ?

See photo, which way does hole go in the photo, I think down but painted over any indication marks.

It's a weep hole.

Hole leaks coolent when pump is going bad.

Yep. When the shaft bushing wears enough, the antifreeze will weep past the bushing then down and out. Otherwise the antifreeze would migrate out front behind the fan. You know what happens when IT "hits the fan".

remember to use sealer on the bolts

Yes, did that and no leaks
