I just pulled my thermostat housing off the 440 (leaking) to replace the gasket. Found a 195 degree stat in there, which appears to be the correct temp for this application (1970 block).
Was advised that I may want to use a 160 stat instead, so that it will open sooner. I have had no issues with overheating, and - to the best of my knowledge - the stat was working properly.
Thoughts?
